Close to a perfect summer day!

First of all. I haven't been blogging or anything like that lately because I've been at our summerhouse where you just constantly end up doing stuff. It's where I am right now as well but for the first time in a long time I'm here all alone, which means it's easier to concentrate on writing.

So ye, today was a pretty epic day. I've been out to sea. I made a nice BBQ dinner for myself, feels weird to bbq for only yourself. I enjoyed a really cool sunset, while heating up the sauna.

Had a long relaxing sauna session. It's sooo chill to just sit there in the warm sauna looking at the flames behind the glass. Skinny dipping/swimming in the sea where the water was just perfect. I had some cold beers in the sauna, and one of the times I was sitting outside cooling off with my beer and owl flew straight over me. Owls are badass, like the birdversion of ninjas. They have insanely good and precise hearing (in the winter they hunt mice trough layers of snow), they are completely silent in the air and when they sit up in the tree you can barely see them cos they sit freakishly still.

Now it's completely dark outside so might go practice some astrophotography, loads of fun and really challenging. At least with my gear and skills. But you gotta start somewhere right?

My sister and her boyfriend just left today so kinda weird not having them here since the evenings are usually the time we sit at the kitchen table socialising or watch series. I think they spent like 6 or 7 weeks here and were kinda bummed out about leaving. Got to go sailing with them on sunday (damn this week has gone by fast). Tomorrow I'm off to Turku on new adventures.

Last but not least!!!!!!!! The frikin edit that took me FOREVER to get done. SKDÄÄÄM!!!

Season is over! Onboard SendOff Session Final Edit.

So there hasn't been that many clips this season. I still got some unedited because we kinda wanted to try to save up for a longer clip but the weather was against us most of the time and on top of that I managed to injure both of my knees which forced me to spend alot more time off the board then I wanted to. To give you some info there will be at least one pow clip from Riksgränsen and one park clip from Levi if not two small ones. Due to my injury and unemployment there are alot of things to get done but I should get everything edited within a month. If you follow snowboarding sites you might have noticed that Onboard MAgazine had their Send Off session at LEvi this year. The Park crew worked long days for about a whole month to get everything build and it turned out amazing. Levi is truly underrated when it comes to park standards, in a way it's a good thing because the park is hardly ever that crowded. I'm not sure if it's at 100% but next season there might be some big changes around the parks at Levi, and all I can say is that it's most likely going to be really epic. Most insane week ever & Vide-Oh! s3ep1

Last week was the most sucky week of my entire life so far. It felt like whetever could go wrong, actually went wrong.
It all started a week ago on Monday. Made myself a breakfast smoothie in the blender. Detaching the jug from the machine the frikin bottom came off and the smoothie was all over the kitchen. Basically ment skipping breakfast and cleaning the kitchen. Coming to work it was -32 outside. I had already felt sick the day before but at his point I felt like I was about to suffocate because of the cold air combined with already irritated lungs and throat. Went to the doc and got sent home for 5 days.

On Tuesday I was boiling some water for tea. This ended up with me somehow managing to push over the water cooker and getting around 1 liter of boiling water on my thigh. 2nd degree burns.... I'm really killing it. I guess I should feel lucky. 15cm higher up and it would have been a whole other story, and something I don't even that I don't want to think about.

So basically Tuesday to Friday was about taking care of my burns and my flu.

On Saturday I didn't feel sick anymore so we headed over to Svanstein ski resort in Sweden together with Kaarle and Ulla. This was a really fun day with alot of rolling around in the offpiste. Not the best riding on our part but I got some nice footage I will put up later. However it was still a super fun day (pictures below). But on a week like this fun comes at a price.... My new Adidas boots broke, one of the laces came off. Since it's a quicklace system I couldn't fix it. I've been in contact with the retailer who is basically trying to get me to fix them myself somehow which to me seems kinda strange. I guess I will have to try.

Sunday, last day of the week, what could go wrong?
The weather is great, riding feels good. And they finished the halfpipe at Levi. Riding the pipe and the front slope jumps enjoying just throwing down tricks that are easy to us. On the last jump I throw down a fs3 landing it clean but then a few meters later catching my heel edge on something. It wasn't a hard fall but I completely messed up my thumb. I had it x-ray'd and the good thing is that it wasn't fractured or injured. Still really swollen and hurt alot so it still ruined riding for me.

Today it's Monday and I feel like it can't get worse, just uphill from here. That had to be all the bad luck that you usually get in several months. Now work for a few days and then 2 days off. Really hyped on riding right now so let's hope my luck turns.

The pow clips from Svanstein should be up soon and at the same time I will put up a short review about the resort and what we taught about it. This week I will try to get Ulla's video part filmed.

A new clip out of nothing!

The weather here hasn't really improved lately. If the sun is shining, it's really windy. If it isn't windy the light is prolly really flat, and so on.
Got no more work this season which makes it slightly easier to try getting something filmed if the weather is good for even a few hours. However we filmed on a bad day and I think the footage is entertaining. The snow is melting faster that ever but we should get 15cm of snow this night.
Lately there has been alot of pro boarders riding at Levi such as Eero Ettala and Heikki Sorsa, so who knows, maybe we'll see something filmed over here in the next episode of CWG.

Episode 4 is out! We got some really nice sunny days but the wind was still bothering so we only got a few jumps filmed on the big ones before it got too windy. Still nice to have some contrast once in a while!

So alot of stuff happened at X-Games with (the) Parrot taking the gold in both slopestyle and big air.
I think it's getting more and more booring to watch the X-Games since it's just more and more acrobatics every year. If someone does something new that isn't a tripple, they don't get the points they disserve. This is why the next clips are my favorite ones from X-Games. If you haven't seen them before pay attention to his boots with LED lights in the Nike Logo.





I know I'm a traitor but I actually bought skiing boots, since the boots we got at work are really bad.

So what's been happening here? Not much, been super cold earlier this month and after that it's been snowing almost every day. Due to the light there is not point in filming that much we filmed some really scetchy runs that I might edit into some small clip just for the fun of it. This week i've bee sick. For some reason without crashing or anything my injury from before christmas got really bad again and my ribs hurt like crazy.
I did go swimming yesterday which helped abit so gonna do that again today and maybe I'll be fine to ride on the weekend.

It's soo booring to just be at home and try to recover, it's a good thing it's no big injury, I think!
I guess I'll just watch another movie...

So it took me a while but now it's done.
Special for this video is that we got guest riders Mikko Takamaa and local hero/pro snowboarder Nuutti Niemelä in it.
Adobe Premiere is actually really fast to use once you get the hang of it, this took me about 20 hours to do cos I watched alot of tutorials on youtube. Now it would take me just a few hours if I did it non stop. Now it's time to go shredding since it's my day off, which means it's -32 outside, good times....

Snowboarding until we get to snowboard some more!

It's been a slow start this season. Mainly because there isn't really enough snow to go offpiste that much and the park will get finished at the end of the incoming week.
As I wrote before, I sold my Ride MAchete and my Lib-Tech T.Rice board which left me with nothing for the groomers. So I've been riding the rental boards for the past weeks and I can't seem to find a board in the Nitro selection that I like. The Team 1.0 or whatever it's called was ok, basic camber which is nice on groomers.

I was working on the slalom world cup when they had the first race at Levi which was a cool experience. There's a hellalot of work that goes in to the competition that takes less than 6 hours across 2 days, completely insane. And you would think you'd get to follow the comp closer that anyone which is true, but between the stuff you have to do you actually just see the competitors pass by really fast and you have no idea of who's leading or anything. Still had a fun week.

Work start tomorrow, it's weird cos I feel abit nervous even tho I'm well prepared and I know how everything works. I'll be working long hours almost all week so I guess I'll be back to the old routine in a few days. Or not, lately there has been no routine what so ever.

The "park" in Kaarle's backyard is more epic than ever. This fall we built this platform from where we get speed for the rails. I't about 2m high, 2x2m wide, kinda overkill. And awesome.
We got the rails set up, the jumps and the takeoff shaped and "watered". Now we just gotta see when we both got time to film, and more than anything, try to get some skills!

Last thursday I got my new board, bindings and boots. I wanna ride the setup a few days before I reveal what I'll be riding this season. I'll prolly write a small review since it's kinda fun, and it might be helpful for some people considering the same gear.

Talking about new gear. I also sold the GoPro HD Hero2 and bought the HERO3+ Black Edition.

Today the world lost Paul Walker from the Fast&Furious movies. In a car crash when he wasn't even driving himself.  Damn shame. I liked him as an actor and the movies will never be as good if they continue the Fast&Furious series with someone else in the lead role. R.I.P. Paul.

Ride Machete Review

 First of all here are the specs straight from the Ride website.

     Allright, first of all I think LowRize™ Rocker might confuse people since it's far from a rocker board, and feels completely different. The board is flatbased betveen the bindings and got a small rocker after the inserts.

Austin Hironaka shreds everything on this board and does it with style, and it's true, you can use this board in any terrain. First impression I got from this board was that it's reeeeally precise, if you stomp a trick in a perfect straight line it will stick to that line. Sometimes it felt like your torso wanted to continue spinning but the board stops you. Straight jumps feel like you don't have to do anything at all. Even if it's really precise the LowRize™ Rocker makes it playful at the same time. But since the flex is a 6 it's not a board that bends that easy, so when doing tail/nose presses you have to push into it abit.

I didn't detune the edges on the board and it still handles really well on rails and boxes. On rails it's where you really notice how stable this board is. On hardpacked groomers it handles well when you really carv into the turns but I felt like if you get abit sloppy the contactpoints won't hold too well. It feels safe and handles well in high speeds. The turnradius feels really wide so you have to get in to cruising mode. In ice I think it's really hard to get a good grip, but then again if you're into riding groomers only I think you should get a camber board.

I didn't get to ride any powder on the Machete so kinda hard to say how it handles, but from watching other reviews it's supposed to handle really well. On slush you gotta me careful not to force the board and try just to cruise since I feel like forcing it might make you loose control of the board.

So to sum this up I would say that this is an excellent allaround freestyle board for an advanced rider, a beginner is prolly better of with the Ride Crush for example. If you aren't into the freestyle stuff this is in my opinion not the board for you, it IS a matter of opinion but Ride has really good all mountains boards for groomers.

When coming to pros and cons I think most of the cons have something to do with stuff outside the park. And as I said, this is an excellent board for everything in the park, everything from rails to big kickers. I almost forgot to mention that this board is great in the pipe aswell, made it really effortless. If you want a super soft jib board or ride mostly outside the park I don't think this is the board for you. But if you're an advanced freesyle rider who wants a board that can handle anything in the park, this is the board for you.

Black Bear Open

Last friday was my last working day of this season and to celebrate that me and Kaarle headed to Björkliden for the Black Bear Open competition. It's basically a slopestyle comp in the back country. Since it's this latre in the season we're not talking about pow, but heavy and wet snow. So it was kinda just about hitting all the obstacles without falling down. As the guy hosting was saying all the time: "This is the most difficult park in scandinavia" And that was the truth. The runin to the first jump went trough some bushed, and at the same time it was narrow and crazy bumpy. Some people crashed before even getting to the first jump, ending up in the bushes. Neither of us got into the finals since I feel liek we tried to push ourselves abit too hard on the first jump, hah! The landing was super bumpy and you had to start breaking as soon as you hit the ground to not loose control and crashing in to the next obstacle. Completely insane competition but at the same time really fun. All in all it was a really fun weekend, fun shredding and alot of nice people. Here are some pictures from the "park":

On the way back to Levi it started snowing ALOT, but the weather was still quite warm so I guess that it's only a good thing if you're prepared to hike up to 1000m+ or something. We stopped for some food in Kiiruna where something really random happened. In the grocery store we saw Jake Blauvelt. They bought groceries for over 500€ so I guess they are staying for a while wherever they are going. So this is the last week at Levi. We're hoping to get some filming done but the weather is and has been reaaaally bad, it's raining and +4 almost every day and it doesn't seem like it's going to get much better. But I guess we just have to film in the rain if it doesn't get any better.

LeviCamp351 starts on friday so let's hope the weather get's better by then.

Wazzup! I'm actually uploading my newest clip as I'm writing this post. Because my computer doesn't want to fully agree with me it took me like 10 hours to edit, on top of that I couldn't add any effects such as slowmotions because that would end up with the computer crashing. But still. Last weekend we took a different approach on filming, we left the GoPro in the bag, used my normal vid cam and planned ahead what we wanted to film and where. However I'll edit those clips tomorrow, today I edited stuff we filmed earlier this month. We got what we wanted and the results were good, even tho I took a pretty nasty fall on my ass. I don't even think it's possible but it felt like a broke my right butt-cheek. But for once we got it on film and I will put it in the edit tomorrow. At the end of the day I took this cool picture of the sunset and Kaarle taking pictures of the sunset (not edited in any way). On saturday I actually felt abit weak already but yesterday I still desided to go to work, it was a slow day but still got the most of my strength. Today it felt hopeless getting out of bed, I was pretty much out of breath from sleeping. Went to the doctor and got subscribed 3 differend meds and 3 sick days. This is one reason why I have had time to edit. I did take a break mid day cos I found it hard to stay awake. I got my new bindings, Ride Rodeo, and they are just awesome. The date is set for our Björkliden trip so it really looks like this is happening, totally hyped about that. Let's just hope for awesome weather. So if my computer is feeling friendly tomorrow there will be another edit coming up tomorrow. Until then... Good Night!! zzzZzZzzzzzZz

Getting colder! Skiing holidays are closing in...

It's almost a month since my last post. Time is just passing by so damn fast it's ridiculous. This week has been the first week of a healthier diet and lifestyle and I feel really good about it already. I've met awesome people at work and gotten some really nice feedback. All in all a good week. So what's new. The weather has been quite nice until this week/the past few day, the sky has been clear which is nice and the days are getting longer. It's awesome when the sun is out but it also usually means that it's pretty darn cold. For example today at work it was -29C/-20.2F which kinda takes the fun out of working outdoors.

This is a cool picture of some weird phenomenon, took this pic today and it's not edited in any way. It was warmer at the top of the front slope so I guess that is one of the reasons you can see the sunrays.

Last weekend I went to Helsinki to move all of my stuff out of my appartment which kinda sucked, on the upside I got no rent to pay. So I guess I'm more or less homeless at this point. The most annoying thing about going to Helsinki was that it started snowing the night before I left, and snowed for almost a whole week. For once the temp stayed above and around -10C/14F which ment the snow stayed light and soft. When I got back the best pow days were over but still got some sweet runs during the week.

The weekend before I went to Helsinki me and 9 others from the ski-school went to Aakenus near Ylläs to look for some powder, we ended up hiking alot and getting two poor runs, or actually poor doesn't really begin to explain the first one. But the food was good and the surroundings beautiful.

I was about to start editing at one point but Kaarle felt like it's better to film abit more, so that we have. My computer sucks big time but I managed to capture some frames from the new footy, suddenly everything froze so I desided to just leave it for now. So until I get the new edit done, here is a little something.

Kaarle totally killed ito n the rails but I'm going to leave that as a surprise.

Really lazy editing!

OK so I got the editing done yesterday and the clip uploaded today. Since my computer isn't the best one for editing I desided not to cut too much or add effects or anything. I'm trying to get the filming more organized which would make editing more efficient.
I'm loosing it more and more at work, 20 more days and it's done. I really seem to be in the wrong line of work, then again I don't see how some people can like it. Then again you could be picking up roadkills from the side of the road for a living.
Tomorrow it's time to see the doc again about my back/neck since it doesn't feel too good from the last big crash(es).
Yesterday we went to see Paleface performing at Hullu Poro Arena (The Crazy Reindeer Arena). Good sounds, alot of friends enjoying the music and dancing like crazy people. The fun thing is that my legs feel like I attended a 2 hour long bodypump session last night, I gotta admit, there was some crazy moves thrown around. It's not completely safe to find yourself on the dancefloor with Ulla, that usually means you wont be leaving until the music stops.
I've become totally hooked on Skrillex, taught I was going to show you this video. Alot of people have prolly seen it already but I think it's really cool.


Time for shredding material, It's abit long and there are some parts that could have been shortened so sorry about that. I will start editing Kaarle's part asap.
There isn't that much to tell about this vid, filmed by Kaarle who did an awesome job on the followcam in the end. Filmed on 18.3 if I remember correctly, I think we had like 2 warm-up runs and then just desided to try getting getting something on tape, I think we did ok. Enjoy and pleeeeeease gimme feedback on, well, anything.

FIRST VLOG!

The quality is shit and I don't know why, I guess I did something wrong haha!
This was really hard to do. Talking by myself to the camera and not studder.
If someone is reading this blog feedback would be nice. The riding so far is shit and this was more of a test, I mainly wanted to try to make the first one so that I would know how to improve.
I will not be able to upload this the same day as I filmed it because the connection I got is slower than slow. 6 days of work and I will be a free man for a few day. Can't wait...
FIRST VLOG EVER

What happened?

The end of the season got pretty hectic and I have nothign else to say for myself to explain why I haven't blogged in almost a month now.
The end of the season was alot of work and bad weather, and ofcourse alot of partying coming to the first of May and people realizing they won't be seing each other in the next 8 months or longer.
First of May wasn't that special, alot of people dressed up as animals and other funny things but then again people do that on Levi during almost the whole spring season so it felt more or less normal. Only differense was that people were partying harder than usual, and it was a fun weekend.

After two days of partying we headed to Riksgränsen in Sweden for some BC riding.
The carride takes about 5 hours from Levi and you get to go abroad, heh! The scenery in that area is amazing but a very disturbing thing was all the reindeer cadavers along the road, some in a thousand bits and some eaten to the bones by other animals.
When we got the the hotel in Riksgränsen we unpacked, ate some noodles and when hiking, at 11pm. At that time of the yer it never gets completely dark over there so you could ride durin the whole night if you wanted to, but nights are colder and after a warm day everything becomes more or less ice. First hike was about 150m and maybe 20m vertical haha! After that we checked out some higher "peaks", it was all more about hiking than quality riding but we had fun so who cares.

Riksgränsen day one!
Woke up around 9, ate some breakfast, got our passes and headed to the lifts, everyone were hyped to go riding Riksgränsen.
From the chairlift you can clearly see alot of awesome lines. Due to the hard snowfall they had during the week before followed by awesome weather during the weekend, everything had been ridden and all that was left was ice.

During theese following day I think we were around 15 people from Levi but I ended up riding with only Aki, Marika and Marja. The first rides were with almost everyone that came from Levi but then we headed hiking sinse there was no park what so ever and now pow near the slopes.
First hike was up the closest peak at around 1000+ meters above sealevel to a peak I think is called Nordalsfjället from where you can ride down to the lifts if you feel like it. Thats a really popular ride so you got nice tracks to hike on that side.

The reason Marika is hikin on the side of the track is that the steps on the tracks are annoyingly big for her short legs :) She's still a hardcore hiker.

When we got up there we needed to choose which direction to ride to since you could ride in all directions. But ofcourse you had to spend some times taking pictures on the top of our first hike:

Behind me is the mark of the highest point and Marika taking a picture of the Norwegian fjord you can see behind us. The sign or poster is actually a recruitment poster for the swedish army, laff!
We ended up riding down the other side of the mountain, we knew the hike back to the resort would be alot longer but it was completely untouched so we desided it was worth it, and it was.
I actually have some video footage of one of the first runs, unstable filming etc. so desided to just upload the raw footage.



The point is to show where we spend most of our first day hiking a mellow run in the sun. (awesome rime by the way)
There was 5-10cm of powder on a harder layer of snow, it felt really good even tho deeper pow would have been nice, The rest of the week we actually went to other places with abit deeper pow.
After hiking almost the whole day everyone had a hard time even staying awake after getting to the hotel, I don't think I managed to stay awake past 12 a single night. (now I'm not counting the night we got there when we were out hiking until 1am or something)

Riksgränsen day 2

In the morning I had a talk with one of the heli-ski guides who when I asked him told me that you get to ride the same stuff as you do going on a heli-ski trip if you hike the peaks around Riksgränsen. We still wanted to go further than the day before so we rented a snowmobile, funny thing is that there were 4 of us and we rented one, this actually made it more fun.
Aki had to make a detour with the thing to get about halfway up the mountain so the rest of us took the lift up and we met at the restaurant at the slopes.
From this point Aki and Marika were on the snowmobile and the pulled me and Marja, this worked really well and was really fun.

The weather was still perfect, just cold enough not to get slushy and sunny the whole day. Giving each others rides to the top with the snowmobile was fun both for the ones riding and the ones driving. A truly legendary day.
We got back around 5 or 6, made some dinner and made a trip to Narvik, Norway. Narvik was nice, I think all of Norway is but still... Some old ladys celebrating something wanted me to take like a zillion pics of the with their cameras and as a reward I got a red rose, very romantic gesture.

We checked out the scenery, bought beer, cider, candy and Marja bought a toy and then we headed back to Sweden.

Riksgränsen day 3

Still snowmobiling up and down the hills. Well, actually not that many times since we started of the day with a almost 4 hours long hike to a peak something like 1542m above sealevel on the norwegian side of the border. First part of the hike was trough a ravine or whatever you wat to call it, the sun was reflecting from every direction and it was hotter than hot. On the way we saw this jump that some moron had built, crazy narrow takeoff, steep as f and then almost flat so that the g-force will throw you to the ground. Might have been the reason why there were only two tracks on the landing. The guy who jumped and the guy who promised to jump if his buddy jumps ;)

After a while we got of the ravine or small valley and it got steeper, then steeped and even more steep. I was so hyped halfway up when I realized that there actually was quite alot of pow at that altitude already, this was going to be a legendary ride.

So finally getting to the top of the mountain after an almost 4 hour hike the feeling was more than rewarding, and the view absolutely breathtaking.
It seemed like every time we hiked we spend almost one hour at the top just fooling around taking ALOT of pictures.
Since I got lots of pictures from this trip I was thinking of putting them all up on flickr or something. I'll check that out later today.
After almost an hour we strapped in and headed down the mountain. I desided to pick a steeper line which ended up in a small bowl because almost the whole line was in the shade almost during the whole day and I had a hunch that there would be deeper pow within that area.
I was right, I had deep and soft powder the whole run. At the end it got really steep, I had to remember what the face looked like since I remember there being some small drops with rocks in the landing etc. The run went well and I was so hyped when I got to the bottom I couldn't find words for the feeling, it was just amazing.
We got back kinda late and as usual everyone were all out of juice and kinda fell asleep wherever. This was awesome, spending the whole day outside hiking and riding and then just fall asleep when you get home and sleep better than ever, wake up, and do it again.

Riksgränsen day 4!
We had to clean our room before breakfast because they wanted the inspect it before we could leave. Then we packed everything in the car and went riding.
We had no sled today so we just hit the groomers and did some easier hikes on Nordalsfjället. As every day before it was sunny, we basically took it easy and had some fun before we had to head back to Levi.

Last days at Levi
Last days at Levi can be summed easily into saying that they were days of partying with people you'll prolly run into the next winter the next time if even then.
There was the Levi Camp351 happening at the flontslope park, I went there and had some fun on the jumps even if the park was in terrible shape cos of the warm weather and rain. It was still fun to hit some bethods and rocket airs. Oh yeah, I got my new boots on the last day of riding which made riding abit scetchy.
It was a nice ending to the season with 2 days of partying, live music and good company. But at the same time it felt good to leave Levi for a while at least.
